IN THE SPOTLIGHT | MIGUEL

Miguel was born Miguel Jontel Pimentel. He spent a handful of years behind the scenes and flirted with the mainstream before he released his first hit single and became one of pop-R&B's most significant artists. When he was 16, the San Pedro, California native was involved with Drop Squad, a production company. Three years later, he was offered a slot in Fatty Koo, and even appeared in the R&B group's BET reality show, but he turned the position down and eventually signed with the Black Ice label. In 2006, "Getcha Hands Up!" was issued as a single, and its video aired on BET.

An album, Young & Free, was planned for release with distribution from Universal, but it was never issued. By that point, he was becoming increasingly known in the underground through his collaborative work with Blu, Exile, and Daz-I-Kue.

After opening up for Mary J. Blige’s “Music Saved My Life” tour, newcomer Miguel will have anothers opportunity to showcase tunes off his debut album, All I Want Is You, in front of thousands. The L.A. native will embark on a 25-city performance spree with Usher, beginning tonight in Seattle. Miguel will set the stage before the “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” hitmaker greets his fans during the “OMG Tour,” which also features crooner Trey Songz. So how did the half-Mexican, half-black singer score the opportunity to perform with two veteran R&B charmers? “I was on the train coming from Washington, D.C. and Usher called and asked me to come on tour with him,” Miguel tells Rap-Up.com. “That’s my boy too, by the way. That’s my big bro.”

His debut studio album, All I Want Is You, was released in November 2010 and features the top ten hit All I Want Is You featuring J. Cole. Throughout October 2010, Miguel toured with singers Mary J. Blige and Jazmine Sullivan, as well as supporting Usher and Trey Songz on the OMG Tour from November to December. He received a 2011 Grammy Award nomination for his work on Jaheim's single Finding My Way Back. The Adorn Songfacts reports that "Adorn," the first single from Miguel's second album Kaleidoscope Dream, was released on July 27, 2012. It was originally included on his Art Dealer Chic: Vol 1 mixtape. Miguel worked with a local production duo Drop Squad in 2000, before being signed with independent record label Black Ice in 2004. He signed with Jive in 2007.
